«Biutiful» by Alejandro González Iñárritu: Аfter midnight the hall of "Lenkom" burst into applause

Despite the fact that "Biutiful" was successfully held in the Russian box office not long time ago, yesterday it gathered almost a full hall of "Lenkom" even without being dubbed. However, it is not surprising. The director Alejandro González Iñárritu, as well as the actor Javier Bardem, is very popular among our moviegoers (for his early works - "21 Grams" and in particular for "Babylon"). Besides, the film's numerous awards prove that it is a real masterpiece.

"Biutiful" is the story of a father with two children. Uksbal, is struggling with an incurable disease and is trying to find money to pay the rent. Despite the fact that Iñárritu likes to ruin lives and twist plot lines in his films, here there is only one character. He educates his children, argues with his ex-wife and elder brother, helps a refugee family, cremates the body of his father, speaks to the souls of the dead, but does not want to die himself. It seems that all the horrors of our world are all around Uksbal – he is surrounded by dirt and poverty. And it seems that disease struck not only him, but the society as well. But at the same time, our protagonist sees the beautiful, "biutiful", in flying gulls, in a dinner with the family, in the tumult of the sea.

This is probably one of the hardest films to watch of the festival - being both long and raising complex issues. Iñárritu does not skimp on the creepy scenes and extraordinary candor, as always. But the beauty that Uksbal must have been deprived of for his whole life still prevails. After midnight, when the film ended, the hall of "Lenkom" burst into applause.
