History and a man: Trilogy "Moloch - “Taurus” - “Sun” by Alexander Sokurov

One of the first milestone events of the VOICES Festival is a retrospective of films by Alexander Sokurov. There were 3 films shown of the future tetralogy: “Moloch”, “Taurus”, “Sun”. The forth part, “Faust”, will be presented at the Venice Biennale, and already next year in Vologda.

This year Alexander Sokurov is definitely one of the key figures of the Festival. On the 6th of July the director will be awarded with the “Unlimited Talent” prize. After that there will be shown a film chosen by Sokurov himself, “Russian Ark”. The audience will get a unique chance to see the film on the wide screen.

The trilogy “Moloch”-“Taurus”-“Sun” tells about the flow of history and people, who render it. The first part, as admitted by Igor Guskov, the program director of the VOICES Festival, shows a man on the top of his power, the second – the chief of the nation at the moment of the collapse of the power, and the third one shows a process, vital for the whole nation, and the ability of the spiritual leader of the nation to take on responsibility. This spiritual leader is Hirohito, the protagonist of the film“Sun”, the film which is gentle, calm, and at the same time as documentary as possible. Sokurov showed the events the way they happened in fact, the film is shot extremely close to historical realities – it’s not by accident that the director has been doing his research for the last 15 years.

It needs to be added that the audience here, in Vologda, paid great interest to the retrospective – the films attracted a good crowd. The audience varied from the youngsters to the people of an elder generation, but all of them were very enthusiastic while discussing the things that they have just seen on screen, sharing their thoughts and impressions with each other. At this point it really looks like there won’t be any vacant seats at the master-class of Alexander Sokurov, that will take place on 7th of July at 4 p.m. in the South-Western Tower of Vologda Kremlin.
