A French film “Flowers of Evil” is presented on the Festival in the program “Youth on the March”. It speaks a quite complicated cinematographic language, using the so-called “living” camera, a lot of videos from YouTube and the whole setting being disclosed between the two main characters. The film speaks about simple and understandable things, such as fear, freedom, love, dreams.
A curly-haired young man Rashid prefers to use his Internet nickname Gecko. He lives his life as if he were dancing. A lady from Iran, Anahita, who was sent to Paris by her parents away from the revolution, writes in Twitter and watches videos about disorders in her homeland. She’s afraid she might see some of her friends and acquaintances on the videos. An accidental meeting between Rashid and Amanita develops into love. But will these two young people stay together for a long time?
Despite of the film’s complexity and innovation, Vologodians paid much interest to “Flowers of Evil”. Nobody even cared about the subtitles that are sometimes getting so irritating. Perhaps the reason for that is that the use of the popular web-sites, strange habits of the main character and modern soundtrack are only “the top of the iceberg”. In fact, “Flowers of Evil” is a story about beautiful feelings that can never defeat the horrors of the world around us. Gecko is stressed by his work and Anahita does what she wants, however, he is free and as for her, fear and memories of the life in Iran are a real jail from where she can’t escape. His dreams came true but not hers. It was obvious that the audience were coming out from the cinema in deep contemplation.
