Artisitc identity of province: An interview of the Festival director, Igor Lysenko, on the ProVince TV

Starting this year the VOICES Festival is held not only in Vologda, but in Cherepovets as well. «Cherepovets is a very interesting play ground for us», - admitted the director of the Festival Igor Lysenko on air of the program «5 Vecherov» («5 Nights») on the ProVince TV.

At the beginning of his speech Igor commented on an idea of the artistic identity, of the uniqueness of the various regions in every single country, saying that this is the place where the true national spirit lingers. Festivals held in smaller regions differ greatly from the ones taking place in big cities and centers, but despite the overall complexity of this challenge, the organizers of the Festival want «our Festival to become such an event in Vologda, that everybody would be jealous off it!» A fundamental difference of the VOICES Festival is, first of all, the fact that here is shown the "young" cinema, even debut, in fact; your directors are being supported and helped, who, as a rule, are only beginners. This way the competition program of this year consists of 8 debut films, the remaining 2 are second works in the biographies of their directors. However, these films win international acclaim. The Festival is made for those people who are interersted in cinema, for the thinking audience. «This is no lecture at the University, this is a point of view of a person, who is living by the means of it all», - the phrase said about the master-classes can also be seen in the context of other events as well, even in the context of the Festival in general.

It needs to be said that this year there is taking place a rather «nice» problem — there are more guests arriving in Vologda than there are hotel rooms here.

Igor also admitted that the films of the competition program will be shown with subtitles, without being dubbed. That's the way they are supposed to be presented, because even the voice of the actor is acting in itself: «Dubbed films are like Aphrodite of Melos dressed in a shirt».
