VOICES (Vologda Independent Cinema from European Screens) is an international full-length feature-film Festival which has become the unique place for meeting young European filmmakers. Every year it presents the creations of both well-known directors and beginners. A lot of guests from all over Europe come to Vologda to take part in its program. Every year one European country becomes an honored guest of the Festival: in 2010 it was France and this year it will be Italy.
VOICES will hold its second edition in Vologda and Cherepovets from July 5th to 10th. 2011 is announced to be the Year of Italian Culture and Italian Language in Russia. Thus, representatives of the Italian cinematography will be among the honored guests this year. Italian cinema will be celebrated as main focus of the Festival.
The “Roman Holidays” program will present on the one hand masterpieces of Italian cinema from different eras and genres and on the other hand will attract the attention of Russian audiences to the outstanding modern Italian directors.
As in 2010, the competition will gather 10 first or second full-length films from all across Europe that will be appraised by an international jury. The winner of the 2010 edition, Sergei Loznitsa, will be part of the jury.
The Out-of-Competition film selection will bring the latest creations of many famous directors to the Russian audience through the screening both in film theaters and in the center of Vologda in the local Kremlin.
The guests of the Festival and people of Vologda will have the opportunity to attend different master-classes in which professionals of contemporary cinema (directors, producers, scriptwriters...) will talk about their jobs and share their know-how. Round-tables will gather professionals to discuss some specific themes of the modern cinematograph.
Moreover, in the Kremlin in Vologda free activities will be opened to the public, such as the opening night and closure ceremony, open-air screening and the Italian Day and Russian Day.
